What is Iyengar Yoga?
You do not need to be flexible or know anything about yoga to begin. Iyengar yoga guides students in a way that is practical, experiential, and accessible to all; it is oriented towards gradual but steady progress, rather than quick and fleeting results. Each class is a unique sequence of poses that promotes increased mobility, strength and awareness and ends with a deep period of relaxation leaving one with a feeling of vitality and clarity.
Props such as blocks, belts, blankets and bolsters are often used as aids while practicing asana. The props help students experience the maximum benefits of each pose while minimizing strain, regardless of physical condition.
Certified Iyengar Yoga Teachers (CIYTs) measure their training in years, not hours. After working with a mentor to learn the art of teaching, an aspiring teacher undergoes an assessment process overseen by the national association where candidates are carefully observed and evaluated. CIYTs are trained to provide clear demonstrations of each posture and are skilled in the use of props. With their precise instructions and keen observation of students, they provide support to those less flexible, increase the challenge to the more advanced student and enhance and deepen each student’s awareness of their body.
