support through community

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to participate in Portland Audubon's annual fundraiser, Birdathon. This was my first time co-leading a group—the Warbling Yogis. We had a great time! We did a few poses out on the trails as we searched for birds high and low. And through very little effort, our fledgling team was able to raise over $7,000.

Some of our team members were new to birding, but all of us have a deep connection to the natural world. By participating in this fundraising event, we were able to support an organization that works in our community supporting conservation efforts, education and caring for wildlife that is harmed by our existence. Like many organizations, Portland Audubon is able to do far more than any of us could do individually.

Later this week, another organization that's dear to me, the Iyengar Yoga Association of the Northwest, is holding a member drive—Memberfest NW. Beginning on Friday morning, one free class is being offered every day to members (annual memberships is $60). These classes are being taught by NW teachers. I'll be teaching "Adventures in Sarvangasana" on Sunday, May 23 at 10:00 AM. All classes will be available to view for 14 days.

You may wonder if there are any good reasons for you to become a member of IYANW besides being able to take a few free classes. IYANW is a great resource for students of Iyengar Yoga—there are discounts offered for workshops at participating studios across the region; members have access to an extensive collection of materials in the IYANW Library; and there is a generous grants program that helps students and teachers with the costs of study. And importantly, your participation in this organization supports the Iyengar Yoga teachers and studios of the region. Collectively, we can do so much more than we can individually!
